Different types of YogaiStock_000013757210Small

Hatha yoga

Focuses on bringing your mind and attention to your breath. Hatha yoga uses gentle, slow movements to align the spine and being present in the moment. Beginner level.

Vinyasa yoga

This type of yoga uses a flow of foundational poses and movements, and is great for beginners getting used to the correct postures. Vinyasa yoga is typically constructed with a variety of seated and standing poses, encourages balance, core work, and flexibility. Beginner to intermediate levels of yoga practice..

Heated/ Hot Yoga

Imagine a Vinyasa style class in a heated room at about 90-95 degrees. Heated yoga typically moves at a slower pace with a focus on being present in each pose, while concentrating on breath, alignment, and mindfulness. Intermediate to advanced levels of yoga practice.

Bikram style

Composed of a series of 26 poses, Bikram yoga targets every part of the body, along with its energy systems. The heat helps the body become more flexible, while releasing toxins from the body through sweating. This is a highly advanced level of practice, created for participants well versed in their yoga practice. Advanced level yoga practice.

Power Yoga

Focuses more on strengthening the body, especially the core, while incorporating balance, flexibility, and controlled breathing. Some Power yoga classes may even integrate cardio, or light weights, leaving you feeling like you got in a good workout, as opposed to relaxation/meditation. Intermediate to advanced levels of yoga practice.

Pre-Natal Yoga

Designed for expectant mothers who want to continue focusing on controlling their breath and relaxation. This type of yoga combines gentle stretching and movements that are safe throughout pregnancy.

Within these different types of yoga practice, there may also be different levels. For example, the instructor can choose to make a Vinyasa class more challenging (intermediate- advanced level) by adding more complex balance poses, or binds. Be sure to check the class descriptions online or call ahead of time to see what level the class is. If you are brand new to yoga/ a beginner, I would recommend searching for a Vinyasa Level 1 class or Vinyasa for Beginners. If you are not able to find a specific class for your needs, arrive a few minutes early to class to mention that you are new to yoga to the instructor and ask him/her to show modifications.

*It is VERY important for you to talk to your instructor about any current injuries, or if you are pregnant, before class.
