When acupuncture doesn’t work
This article piggy-backs on my last post about How Many Acupuncture Treatments Will I Need? I couldn’t have summarized things any better than Mei Li has, so I will just link directly to her article — I highly recommend that you take the time to read it: When Acupuncture Doesn’t Work By the time people make it through my door, they are generally exasperated and desperate. This is because the acupuncturist isn’t the first stop for most Americans when they develop a health problem. Most new patients that I see have... [Read more...]
How many acupuncture treatments will I need?
This is one of the first questions that most people considering acupuncture have. We are all busy and money doesn’t grow on trees. It is natural to feel impatient and to hope for a dramatic and rapid results from a new treatment. The short answer to this question is that an “average” initial course of treatment consists of eight to ten sessions, with most people noticing a clear benefit within three to four sessions. Usually during the initial course of treatment sessions are scheduled on a weekly basis, although in severe cases... [Read more...]
Stress as the primary cause of modern disease
Conventional health care providers have just caught onto the notion that disease can be caused or at least perpetuated by emotional factors – just last night I saw a segment on the news that featured a MD at Harvard University who is “pioneering” the use of deep relaxation and meditation for the prevention and treatment of disease. In reality, the idea that mental and emotional stress can cause disease is very old. Chinese medical practitioners have espoused this idea for over 2,000 years. In fact, according to ancient Chinese... [Read more...]
Acupuncture for pain
Although acupuncture is effective for a wide variety of conditions, it is mostly widely renown in the United States as a treatment for pain. In general, there are three types of pain patients who walk in the door of an acupuncture clinic: Patients with acute pain – This type of pain is typically the result of an injury. A good example would be an ankle sprain. In this case, pain serves as an alarm that signals you to rest and protect the painful area long enough for it to heal. In a way that is not yet understood by science, acupuncture... [Read more...]

Will acupuncture help with my condition?
There are seven key benefits of acupuncture: It relieves pain. It regulates immune function. It regulates and balances hormones. It elevates mood. It relaxes muscles. It eliminates stress. It enhances mental clarity. All of these factors taken together can be summed up by stating that acupuncture promotes dynamic balance in the human body, a condition called homeostasis, thereby enhancing the body’s ability to heal itself. For this reason, acupuncture is a valuable complement to conventional medical treatment of almost any condition.... [Read more...]
Does it hurt? I’m scared of needles!
Most first-time patients are pleased and surprised to find that having an acupuncture treatment is a relaxing and pleasant experience. Acupuncture needles are very thin and flexible – about the diameter of a cat’s whisker. Some people feel nothing at all when the needles are inserted while others experience a sensation similar to a mosquito bite, followed by an aching or tingling sensation. Acupuncture does not feel like getting a shot or having blood drawn. An average treatment involves the insertion of between six and sixteen... [Read more...]
Is it safe?
Like any medical procedure, acupuncture is not entirely without risk. Fortunately, injuries are extremely rare among patients treated by trained practitioners. In the United States, acupuncturists use factory-sterilized, single-use, disposable needles. The needles are individually packaged according to strict government guidelines and are discarded immediately after use, so there is no risk of disease transmission. In a Japanese survey of 55,291 acupuncture treatments given over five years by 73 acupuncturists, 99.8% of them were... [Read more...]
How does acupuncture work?
Over two thousand years ago, Hippocrates (considered by many to be the father of medicine) stated: “Natural forces within us are the true healers of disease.” Now in the twenty-first century, scientists all over the world are scrambling to explain how acupuncture works, with varying degrees of success. Though they are discovering bits and pieces of the answer, the bottom line is this: the way that acupuncture works is to enhance, strengthen, and direct these “natural forces”. Contrary to what you may have heard,... [Read more...]
